ACL Prehab & Rehab

The Facts

An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear is one of the most serious injuries in sport, typically requiring surgery and an extended period of rehabilitation. Due to specific anatomical and physiological differences, female athletes are 2 to 8 times more likely to suffer a non-contact ACL injury compared to their male counterparts.

The main function of the ACL is to maintain stability at the knee during athletic movement. An unstable, untrained knee joint carries an increased risk of suffering an ACL tear. Creating stability at the knee joint, requires participation in a comprehensive, multi-dimensional training program.

Prehab

Recent studies show that female athletes participating in a structured injury prevention program experience 41% fewer ACL tears along with significant increases in strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, speed and sport performance.

API's ACL PREHAB program starts with a comprehensive ACL screening to identify specific anatomical and physiological deficiencies. The results of the screen are used to design the athlete's corrective training program which includes a specialized focus on:

  • Hip musculature strength & mobility
  • Core stability & strength
  • Hamstring & quadriceps strength ratios
  • Knee deceleration movements

Rehab

The rehabilitation and recovery from an ACL tear can be a lengthy, difficult process. Injured athletes must retrain sport-specific movement patterns and regain confidence in their body to fully recover from injury.

API's ACL REHAB program bridges the gap between physical therapy and a successful return to sport-related activities.

The athlete will continue on their road to recovery in a safe, controlled environment where:

  • Sport-specific movement patterns will be re-learned
  • Confidence will be re-gained
  • Probability of further injury will be decreased.
